When American Airlines announced plans to build the C.R. Smith Museum at its Fort Worth facility, the organization of retired American Pilots "Silver Eagles" swung into action. The organization located, acquired and with the help of other retired employee organizations, restored the Flagship Knoxville to its original 1938 American Airlines colors and configuration. For a number of years the aircraft was on display outside the museum and the harsh Texas climate took its toll on the skin and fabric. Prior to   the aircraft's installation in its new museum hangar facility in March, 1999, it underwent yet another restoration in the fall of 1998. The fabric patch framed with this photo of the Knoxville is from the 1998 restoration and is available through Air Nostalgia in conjunction with the C. R. Smith Museum.
