Between May 8 and May 27, 1919 the world press was on the edges of its seats as the U.S. Navy's flying boats NC-1, NC-3 and NC-4 made their attempt to be first across the Atlantic. The successful aircraft was the NC-4 under the command of Lt. Cmdr. Albert C. Read with Lt. Walter Hinton as co-pilot. Of the three flying boats involved in the effort, the NC-4 is the sole survivor and currently resides in the  National Air & Space Museum. Lt. Hinton's photo and autograph on a commerative cover from 1931 are framed with a relic piece published by the National Air & Space Museum and containing a fabric patch from the 1970s restoration of the aircraft.
